CBD and Neurodegenerative Health (Parkinson’s, MS, and ALS)
Share
Millions of families worldwide are affected by Neurodegenerative Disorders. Watching a loved one lose motor control or cognitive function is a heavy burden, but the emerging research into High-Dose CBD is offering a new lens of hope for management and quality of life. We have seen numerous patients, and their families, find relief with CBD, THC, and cannabis for their symptoms.
The Global Impact
- Parkinson’s Disease: Affects over 10 million people globally.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Affects approximately 2.8 million people.
- ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease): A rarer but devastating diagnosis affecting roughly 225,000 people worldwide.
These conditions are often defined by inflammation, oxidative stress, and the breakdown of neural pathways. This is where the “Neuroprotective” qualities of CBD become a game-changer, and why these are all qualifying conditions to receive your medical marijuana card in Arizona.
The Research: How CBD Works
Studies suggest that CBD acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, protecting neurons from further damage.
- Parkinson’s: Research shows that CBD can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce “REM sleep behavior disorder” and tremors. Doses in clinical trials often range from 300 mg to 600 mg daily.
- Multiple Sclerosis: CBD (especially when paired with trace amounts of THC) is widely recognized for reducing muscle spasticity and neuropathic pain.
- ALS & Beyond: In neurodegenerative cases, CBD helps manage the “glutamate toxicity” that leads to cell death.
When I first started helping people find alternative relief with cannabis in 2010, I met people who were very hesitant to try anything because they “did not want to get high.” These people were terrified of cannabis due to all the years of propaganda and misinformation that were spread for years. This is around the same time we started learning about CBD and how there are various strains that are naturally higher in CBD and lower in THC.
That opened the door for easing people into an option that would not affect their mental status. Little did we know at the time, in research, that this was what was actually needed for these patients, but they innately knew what resonated with them.
The Recommended Window
For significant neuroprotective effects, “off-the-shelf” doses are rarely enough. Clinical observations often suggest a window of 300 mg to 800 mg of CBD daily, depending on the severity of the tremors or spasticity.
Personal Advocacy
Through my work at the Natural Healing Care Center, I have seen patients regain a sense of “self” and motor stability by utilizing high-dose plant medicine. These aren’t just statistics; these are people getting back to their art, their families, and their daily lives without the heavy “fog” of some traditional pharmaceuticals.
I remember a gentleman coming into the office in 2012; it was his first time trying cannabis as an alternative to his M.S. He was in a wheelchair and constantly having spasms that looked uncomfortable and left him immobile. We helped him obtain his medical marijuana card and gave him some information on what products to try. A year later, he came in walking on his own and smoking the vaporizer we recommended to him at the time. He was able to manage the symptoms with cannabis early enough to walk again.
I only knew about the effects of the vaporizer we recommended because, about a year before opening Natural Healing Care Center, I spent some months working with various cannabis farmers, extract artists, entrepreneurs, brokers, advocates, and more. Some of these people were actually passionate about the plant and used it. They discovered, through individual research, what helped them and what didn’t. This led to the advancements of cannabis extracts.
One person I met was an early pioneer in cannabis honey oil. He would smoke it out of the first handheld extract vaporizers on the market, the G-pen, for his spasms and M.S. He was already in a wheelchair and was working on limiting the progression of the symptoms.
It was my first time ever seeing someone smoke cannabis wax out of a handheld pen. The only option to smoke waxes, batters, and honey oils at the time was through a literal crack pipe. It was so sketchy the first time I saw someone smoke cannabis wax. I thought I joined the wrong smoke circle, haha.
He would take one little puff from that G-pen, and he would stop shaking, speak clearly, and function his mobile wheelchair without issues, all for about an hour; then he would have to hit the pen again. He said it was the most relief, even if temporary, he would receive as the condition progressed over time.
I believe that if we provide the brain with the right plant-based tools, we can significantly alter the trajectory of these conditions. Now we are able to actually see some research to support the results others experienced early on, and we can use exactly what they need instead of “trial and experimenting with dosage.”
Some may need tinctures or edibles; some may feel better with inhalation; others find relief with just topicals alone. The same even goes for the cannabinoids. Some require high amounts of THC, and some need low amounts with other cannabinoids being the focus. Regardless of who you are, you have an endocannabinoid system, and we would love to help you, or a loved one, find some natural relief.
Much Love,
David
